For our M5 Low Rise Slim in ‘CAL' we used Kaihara's (Japan) xx771 denim which is a really unique blend of cotton, lyocell, and polyurethane for stretch. Lyocell, sometimes also known as Tencel™, is sustainably manufactured from wood pulp. And through a really incredible process that wood pulp is turned into soft ‘staples' which are then used to make yarn. Sure, it’s expensive. Sure, its got a soft, drapey hand-feel especially if you use it in lightweight clothing. But when you use it the way we did, it feels nothing short of amazing, but very much still like a jean.
The ‘CAL’ wash is a lighter blue wash but still a year-round color. Moderate dry processing using a combination of laser, oven baking, and hand sanding produces a soft hand, beautiful vintage inspired whisker pattern, with minimal abrasion and zero damage effect around pockets and hems. The roping effect on the hems are gorgeous, as are the high/lows found throughout. This jean is amazing.
The xx771 is a perfect mid-weight denim, weighing in at 11 oz. 3x1 RHT which gives it year-round wearability. The fabric content ratio is 78% cotton, 20% Lyocell, 2% Poly for stretch. The denim itself has this subtle green caste, which is to say that it looks a bit more like denims typically favored in Japan/Europe vs. the classic American denim we all know and love.
